Self-Confidence or Ego?

Have you ever wondered what separates a self-confident person from an egotistical one?

Sometimes, the line between the two is much thinner than we think.

The word ego comes from Greek and means “I.” But what kind of relationship do we have with this “I” within ourselves?

I believe self-confidence begins with knowing yourself. And I mean truly knowing yourself… Not just recognizing your strengths, but being able to see your weaknesses, too. Being able to admit your mistakes, acknowledge your imperfections, and not feel the need to hide them from others.

Being able to accept yourself as you are…

Because being self-confident doesn’t mean knowing everything or always being right. Sometimes, it means admitting you’re wrong, sometimes being able to say “I don’t know,” and sometimes being open to learning something from someone else.

I see self-confidence, in a way, as the relationship we have with ourselves.

A self-confident person is better today than they were yesterday. Tomorrow, they aim to be better than they are today. They don’t compete with others. They focus on their own growth. Someone else’s success doesn’t bother them; on the contrary, it can inspire them.

And perhaps most importantly, they never feel the need to say, “I’m the best.” Because they know that there is always something more to learn.

But what about ego?

Sometimes, a person may seem confident, yet deep down, they constantly feel the need to prove themselves. They want to be right, struggle with criticism, and become defensive rather than acknowledge their mistakes. Perhaps because facing themselves is much harder than appearing strong in front of others.

And this is exactly where we need to ask ourselves a question:

How transparent can we be with ourselves?

How well can we recognize our own mistakes? How honest can we truly be with ourselves? Or do we tend to overlook in ourselves the very things we so easily notice in others?

Perhaps true self-confidence begins when we stop trying to prove to others who we are.
